Chapter Two
Buck tracked Chris’s progress into the living room, the TV immediately turning off as he got a good look at him. “Lookin’ a little green there, stud. Something happen within the last five minutes I need to know about?”
“I didn’t hear all of it, but – what did John say earlier about Vin? About what had been happening lately?”
“That he was concerned about Vin shutting down during the session and that he’d mentioned he’d had a frightening dream involving sexual abuse… of Ezra. Vin didn’t want to talk that much about it so it’s possible there might be some memories resurfacing.”
“Yeah. He was talking about that with Ezra – Ezra was saying that they should join a sexual abuse support group and that NAMBLA would get off on their stories.” Chris was pacing the floor and was like to wear a hole in the carpet. “Do you think – ? At least Ezra’s looking at the book, though. That will help?”
It was almost as if Chris was more traumatized by the boys’ trauma then the boys were – Buck was almost sure he’d believe that if he wasn’t more sure that Ezra and Vin were repressing their feelings. Chris used to have a tendency to repress and brood over things and he still would brood, but he tended not to repress when he had Buck to vent to. That was the way Buck wanted it, though; shaking the crap out of Chris when he was being a hardheaded ass wasn’t his idea of fun. “Reading it would be the first step. So, Vin told Ezra that he’d gone through the same thing he had?”
Chris paused then shook his head. “If he did I didn’t hear that part, but that was the implication. Why else talk about joining a sexual abuse support group?”
“Would it change anything?”
“What?”
Buck rolled his eyes and pointed at the couch for Chris to sit down before he made them both dizzy. “I’m asking if it would change anything if he had been molested.”
The glare on Chris’s face no longer had any affect on Buck, but it didn’t stop Chris from glaring. “I don’t like that word.”
“Does rape sound better? Or are we going with the PC ‘sexually abused’?”
“No. Never mind.” Chris shifted away from Buck when the other man would have draped his arm across his shoulders. “Your point is that it doesn’t change anything so it doesn’t technically matter even though it’s a huge revelation and now he’ll have to deal with that, too.”
“Okay, stop that now.”
There was weariness in Chris’s eyes when he peered at Buck in confusion. “Stop what?”
“You know what. Chris, what the hell is going on? I touch you and you jump out of your skin like I’m hurting you.”
“I am not.”
Buck reached out to touch his shoulder and Chris twitched, his jaw tightening as he tried to control his reaction. “Uh-huh. Do I have to break this down like I would for one of the boys or are you going to talk to me already? You tell me about what’s going on with Ezra and Vin, but you aren’t going to tell me why you’re having this little problem?”
The narrowed eyes were calculating and thoughtful in what was Chris’s version of pouting. “It’s not a problem.”
“Oh, no, not a problem at all unless we ever want to have sex again, which doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon. Want to try again?”
“Damnit, Buck! How can you even think about that with what they went through? They were violated as no one, let alone a child, should be.” Chris was angry with himself more than anything else because he’d told himself it was ridiculous to be thinking about it as much as he was. It was like a second-hand trauma, if there was such a thing.
It took effort but Buck managed not to say something particularly trite or offensive like “let it out” or “there, there it will be all right” even though each occurred to him in turn. Not only would Chris bristle up like a scared cat and attack him, but it would probably set him back another week or two in the no-sex department. Chris was harder to get in the mood then any woman Buck had ever dated, though they’d managed to work past Chris’s vanilla-sex phase pretty nicely. That had just taken lots of good sex and feeding ideas to Chris in the moments before and after orgasm when he was most susceptible to suggestions. The problem with Chris was that he was just as happy curling up with a good book as he was fooling around and books had never held Buck’s attention for more than a second or two, not when he could be getting a little action instead.
“Chris. I’m going to give you a little bit of advice.” Buck crept up beside him and slowly enfolded Chris in his arms, his teeth sinking faintly into Chris’s earlobe just enough to make him shiver pleasantly. “Get over it. You aren’t helping yourself and you aren’t helping them by dwelling on it.”
“And you have no hidden motives for me getting ‘over it’, Buck?”
Buck chuckled into Chris’s neck. “Of course I have hidden motives, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t damn fine advice, either. Besides, some stress-reducing activities could really loosen you up some.”
“You should join sex addicts anonymous.”
“You should take those libido increasing pills that they have for ladies.” The elbow to Buck’s ribs was familiar and almost welcome despite the sharp pain and loss of air it caused.
“You’re an asshole, Buck.”
“Ah, you know you love me.”

After the game on Friday, Ezra team losing by more points than Ezra would ever care to admit, Ezra cuddled up to Vin on the couch. It went unnoticed for a while until Chris walked into the room and saw them like that. “Ezra, get your head off Vin’s shoulder. Get over on the other side of the couch.”
It hadn’t just been the fact that Ezra had put his head on Vin’s shoulder, but that he had more or less draped himself over Vin, his hand and arm just a little too low against Vin’s stomach and Ezra’s body pressed against Vin’s side. Ezra blinked slowly, the look he directed at Chris bordering on the edge of sultry that made Chris uncomfortable. Then with very measured and careful movements Ezra sat up and scooted away from Vin, sliding his hand across Vin’s stomach before placing it in his own lap.
Ezra’s tongue darted out to moisten his lips, which may have been a perfectly innocent gesture if not for the heat in the boy’s eyes. The soft gasp from Vin when Ezra started to lean toward Chris was what finally stirred him into action. “Ezra, go to your room right now.” When the boy didn’t move other than to peer at him from under half-lidded eyes Chris raised his voice, “Right now. Go!”
There was a flash of resistance on Ezra’s face before he slid off the couch and started toward the doorway. Vin was getting up to follow him when Chris snapped his fingers and told him to stay where he was. That made Ezra stop, his body freezing in the doorway and turning back toward them.
“I told you to go to your room.” Chris had a feeling about what was going through Ezra’s head at the moment and the thoughts were not pleasant ones. He hoped that at some point Ezra would begin to trust him, but first Ezra would actually have to start listening to him. “Go on.”
Ezra’s lips moved, forming the word, “No” without actually saying it. He actually forced the word out at the second attempt and by the third Ezra was yelling forcefully. His jaw set and his stance was firmly planted as if ready for a confrontation, which might have provoked a rise out of Chris purely on an instinctual level if the image had not struck him as an almost exact replica of a younger Adam at age three. Adam had made a last stand in that doorway insisting that he was not tired and that he was not going to bed because he was a big boy. He’d been about to yell at Adam because he’d already told him numerous times that he was going to bed when Buck had swept in and grabbed Adam up and tossed him over his shoulder. All he had to say was, “Come on munchkin, I’ll read you a bedtime story then we’ll see what happens from there.” Adam had fallen asleep a few pages into the story.
“Ezra, I’m not giving you the option, all right? I don’t like your behavior right now and you are going to go to your room.”
Despite Chris’s soft tone Ezra seemed to crumple, his face losing all color as he swayed and clutched at the doorway. Before Chris could reach him Ezra had already turned and started toward his room with quick but carefully measured steps.
Vin had stepped up beside Chris and watched him with wide eyes. “He doesn’t think you’re gong to hurt him, does he? Because you won’t hurt him and he should know that and – and – ”
“It’s okay, Vin. If he doesn’t trust me it’s just something – ”
“It’s not okay! How can he not trust you when he knows and I’ve told him that no one’s going to hurt him here? It’s not okay because he has to trust us, dad! How can it get better if he doesn’t trust us?” Vin choked on the rest of the word he was about to say as his mind caught up with his mouth. Confusion and fear flashed in Vin’s eyes in the silence and he almost ran into Buck when he fled the room and headed for the front door.
It was fear that made Chris yell, “Vincent Michael Tanner you stop right there and tell me where you are going!” Fear that Vin was going to run away like he had from previous foster homes because something had upset him. They’d gotten Vin to talk about some of the things that bothered him, mostly past issues and triggers that could cause Vin to react negatively, but Chris doubted that they had even scratched the surface of the problems. This was going to be another one of them.
Vin jolted to a stop, a visible shudder rushing up his spine, his hand out stretched toward the front door. He didn’t turn around and for a moment it seemed as if Vin was waiting for something to happen. Then in a soft, clipped voice he said, “To the woods.” The door was jerked open and Vin stepped out onto the front porch, went down the few steps and into the yard. Two steps forward and Vin bolted again straight for the trees in the distance.
When a sigh Chris brushed past Buck and opened the front door wide before whistling to get Sam’s attention. The dog wagged her tail as she stood and wriggled her way over to Chris. “Go on.” Sam leaped out the door and was following after Vin without any further prompting.
“That sounded promising.”
“Shut up, Buck.” He ran his hand through his hair before turning into the kitchen and leaning against the counter. The situation with Ezra didn’t seem likely to improve anytime soon, but Chris thought that it was possible for them to adapt so long as Ezra continued to deal with the past abuse. Even if Ezra wasn’t ready to tell the counselor there were other ways for Ezra to face what had happened to him and Chris thought that Ezra confiding in Vin was the first step. After that the game plan was lost on him.
Buck’s arms closed around Chris and pulled him back against his chest, resting his chin on Chris’s shoulder. Chris twisted a bit to glance at Buck then relaxed against him, his arms naturally folding over Buck’s. “I did the right thing.” Chris waited a moment almost expecting Buck to disagree but he made no comment one way or another. “He has to learn boundaries and learn what’s appropriate and what’s not. I don’t like him getting scared, but that’s going to take time and trust to erase so there’s no helping it.”
“Sounds like you got it covered. Why don’t you go talk to Ez and I’ll wait for Junior?” Buck kissed Chris’s neck lightly before releasing him. Chris turned and caught Buck by the collar and dragged him down for a proper kiss that Buck more than happily submitted to. “What was that for?” he asked when they came up for air.
“For putting up with me.” It wasn't easy dealing with Ezra and what he'd gone through; if Vin had experienced the same thing than there was an even longer road ahead for him because that was something he'd never told anyone at all. Chris thought he was beginning to come to terms with it and now it was just a matter of helping the boys.
“Ain’t hardly a chore, but I’ll gladly accept the thanks.” His hand wandered down the back of Chris’s jeans and was pulled up short of his goal by Chris’s hand on his wrist.
“Not in the kitchen,” Chris growled as he stepped away from him.
“Why not? You’ve let me before.”
Chris snorted. “Not when we have kids.”
