Summery: This is a Magnificent 7 story, set in 1870’s (time used for series) – Four Corners.

She had no idea what brought her to Four Corners, except maybe him – she had heard he was here at least for a time, but she had to get out of Rock Creek and fast. She was tired and sore, with a broken arm and a few bruises, from a recent beating. No one seeing her ride up to the hotel would have realized it was a woman. She had managed to sneak into her house, change and grab a few extra clothes before leaving and not be seen. That surprised her, since there was usually one of her brother’s in the house at all times. She signed into the hotel using the name ‘Nic Stewart’ knowing it wouldn’t be questioned with how she was dressed. When she left Rock Creek, she had put a bind around her breasts (something she had a hard enough time doing herself with two good arms, but having only the left arm usable made it even more difficult), put on pants, and one of the shirts she swiped from one of her brothers, hid her long hair under the back of the shirt, a hat on, quickly saddled Thunder, her Mustang, and left. If she didn’t look at someone directly, they thought she was a teenage boy because of her small height and build. When she signed in, she also asked for a bath to be delivered to her room, and she didn’t care if they thought it was strange for a boy to ask for a bath or not, she just wanted one.
After cleaning up, she used a dye she brought with her and changed her long blond hair to midnight black, than dusted a lightening powder over her skin and applied heavy makeup to her face to help hide her identity and the bruise on the right side of her face. Her arm hurt like hell and she knew she should have had it taken care of, but she didn’t want to get caught and receive worse than she already had. After finishing with her body and face and making sure she didn’t have any blonde showing, she piled her hair up on her head to make it look shoulder length, and put on a dress that only a whore would wear, but right then, that was how she was feeling because she wasn’t feeling very good about herself. With only a thought, she was down at street level near the saloon.
Getting to the saloon, she didn’t notice the woman watching her, with a frown, across the street, but she did notice, without actually looking, the seven men watch her as she walked in. She ordered whiskey from the barkeep; though it wasn’t something she would normally drink. She knew three of the men in there, but she didn’t notice one of them get up and grab a jacket from behind his chair. He had been sitting at a table with another one she knew, who when Larabee got up the other did too and moved toward the rest of the group. She didn’t hear first comments made, but she did hear the response. Hearing “Never you mind, Chris has his reasons,” made her wonder, until she suddenly felt a jacket covering her from the back, which surprised her, and, though she had never actually heard it with her ears – she lost her hearing when she was four, a voice she knew well say “The lady doesn’t drink whiskey”.
The barkeep faltered for a moment, then said “It’s what she ordered.”
Pushing it out of the way, the man stated firmly “She may have, but she doesn’t drink whiskey.”
The bar keep moved away saying “Whatever you say Mr. Larabee.”
Turning back to her he said “What’s wrong Dee?”
Flicking only her eyes to him, she asked “Why does anything have to be wrong, and how did you know?”
Giving a slight smile, he replied “You wouldn’t be here is something wasn’t, and I know you.”
“That didn’t answer my question Cowboy as to why anything has to be wrong. If I’m needing help, I have plenty in Rock Creek and from the Wyoming Territorial Governor and Wyoming Territorial Marshal. Besides, maybe I just wanted to see a friend that I heard was here, one that is never off my mind or out of my thoughts. But then again those same people in Rock Creek tell me I’m a fool being hung up on someone that’s now hard headed and cold hearted, even when I remind them why, they still think I’m a fool, and a bit crazy.”
“I’ve known you for over twenty years now, so I figure you heard I was here and your showing up means you’re wanting help other than those at home can give you. As to the rest, you’ve never been good at hiding your feelings, at least from me, and I accidentally overheard you say how you felt about me four or five years ago. Even without hearing it, I already knew it but just wasn’t sure if I should act on how I felt, and then things changed. Now, why did you come here instead of staying at home or going to see Alexi or Sam?”
She felt the tears falling and knew that her carefully done face was shot, so she turned slightly to look at him and through the tears and streaked makeup, he saw the bruise. Seeing the icy look come over his face she said in a tear filled voice “I’m running from Jeff. And I did hear you were here. This bruise on my face isn’t the only one Chris. My right arm is broken, and hurts like hell, which is why I ordered the whiskey. I didn’t even stop to see Adam before leaving, I just left.” She looked down at what she was wearing and looked back in the mirror behind the bar and said “Guess this way of hiding myself doesn’t work as easily.”
He realized with a start it wasn’t just anger toward Jeff he was feeling, but also concern for her. Looking at the color of her hair, he asked “Does that stuff wash out?” Receiving a nod, he brought his jacket around the front of her better to close it up some, and turned her toward the group saying “Vin, will you go to my room, grab a couple of shirts for me, and bring them to the hotel. Nathan, I’m going to need your help over at the hotel.”
Both nodded and as Vin was heading out, a woman walked into the saloon and looking at Chris, stated “I need to speak to you Mr. Larabee.”
“It’ll have to wait Mary. I was just heading out.”
“I’m sorry, but it can’t wait.”
Not hearing what the woman said, but hearing Chris’ response, Brandi looked at him and said “If she needs to talk to you, and I’m just guessing that’s what it is from what you said, go ahead. I’m not going anywhere.”
He just looked at her, nodded and went to talk to the woman he called Mary. Vin had walked back over to her and stood in front of her in a protective move. Looking up at him she asked quietly “Who’s that woman talking to Chris, Vin?”
“Mary Travis. She owns the newspaper and her father-in-law is the circuit Judge for here. She must have seen you walk in and not liked it.”
Giving a hollow smile she said “She must not like having women like I’m dressed in here. Hmm, if she only knew that I get called one frequently, only usually it’s with the word ‘Indian’ in front of the other.” She suddenly looked up over Vin’s shoulder then looked back at Vin and asked “Would you help me put my left arm through the sleeve here. Shoot, I need a hat,” as Vin was finishing helping get her left arm through the sleeve, a hat appeared in that same hand. She placed it on her head, turned up the color of the jacket then walked to where Chris was with Vin at her side.
Smiling she stated, “I’m sorry ma’am, but can y’all finish this later. Ya know that problem I was telling you about Chris, it just walked in here. Oh Mrs. Travis, Vin tells me your father-in-law is a circuit judge. Maybe he knows my daddy or Granddaddy, though my daddy is a doctor.”
“Well I’m not sure,” Mary replied, then asked “Who are your dad and granddad?”
Smiling, Brandi replied “Daddy is Dr Alex Stewart, though he decided he’s retired right now living in Colorado Springs, and Granddaddy is Judge Jason Stewart in New Orleans.”
Hearing this, Mary’s mouth dropped and Brandi could see the look of pity and without reading the thought knew it was ‘poor thing, did life treat you that bad then’. Brandi thought she would give Chris a little help before they left so she said “You can’t believe everything you see. Just because I’m dressed like this right now, doesn’t mean it’s what I do, because it’s not. Now the person that just walked in would tell you a different story, but he’d be lying because he doesn’t like me for some reason. Now, we really should leave before he realizes I’m here. Please?”
Nodding Chris said, “Meet us at the hotel Vin, Nathan I’m ready.”
Nathan got up and followed Chris and Brandi out of the saloon. As they were walking to the hotel, Brandi looked at Chris and said “I’d bet she knows them both or Judge Travis does and he’s mentioned them around her.”
Finally laughing a bit at her comments, Chris replied “Could be Dee, but I didn’t need the help.”
Brandi was laughing as they walked into the hotel and had started to answer Chris when she noticed the men in there and after tapping Chris and inclining her head, she dropped her head to keep her face from being seen and went mute.
Chris looked down at her and asked quietly “What room?”
“Thirteen,” was all he received.
“Figures,” he quietly said to her. As they reached the counter he looked up at the woman standing behind the counter. “Morning Maude. Can we get a bath sent up to room thirteen as soon as you can?”
Knowing the tub was still in that room, Maude replied “Why sure Mr. Larabee. In fact there may be one up there already. I’ll send Jose up to check and if so, get clean, hot water for you.”
“Thanks, much obliged,” Chris responded with a nod.
Vin entered the hotel as the three were heading up the stairs with Ezra, JD, Buck and Josiah following a bit behind since they saw the man that made Brandi leave, head out of the saloon and come toward the hotel. As Vin started to follow up, the man walked in and seeing Vin and remembering him from the saloon, asked “So, mister. What’s wrong with your friend you all hustled out of the saloon?”
“Took a bad spill off his horse coming into town and ripped his shirt sleeve. Broke his arm and bruised him up pretty good. Our doc is gonna take a look at the arm and see about fixin’ it,” Vin replied with ease.
Looking at his men, this stranger asked “Did they mention a room?”
“Yeah boss, room thirteen.”
Looking at Maude, the stranger asked “Can you show me who’s registered in room thirteen?”
Nathan, Brandi and Chris all stopped. Brandi had heard the question, only because that was voice she had heard for the last couple hundred years, and she even heard it in her nightmares. Chris looked down at her and just said “Well?”
Without looking up, she replied “Still says Nic but now the last name reads ‘Richards’, so he won’t have a clue. Besides I don’t know if he would realize it if he saw Nic since I’m not sure if he knows my middle name or not. He would question it seeing ‘Nic Stewart’ but won’t or shouldn’t with it as it reads now.”
Nodding, Chris only replied “Good.” Nathan only shook his head not understanding at all.
As they got into her room, Vin wasn’t far behind. Chris helped her off with the jacket as Nathan looked at the arm with Chris telling her “You’ll need to listen to Nathan, Dee. Even if you have to use Vin or I as the go between to hear him.” Receiving a nod from her, he looked at Nathan, and said “Sorry Nathan, you haven’t met Dee yet. Nathan Jackson, Brandi Nicole Stewart. Be best to refer to her as Nic since she won’t be dressed as you would expect a lady to be dressed. She’ll be looking like, well I guess, a boy. That’s why Vin brought my shirts over so she’ll have something to wear.” Just then the three men turned to the door. Being the closest, Vin answered, finding a young man with water buckets standing there. Being shown in, the young man lifted the full tub out the window and started filling it again, never once questioning why it was a woman there instead of a man.
They waited til the tub was refilled then Nathan looked at Brandi and said “Sorry ma’am, but I need to look at that arm.”
Nodding she held it out to the man, knowing he could be trusted if both Chris and Vin trusted him.
After looking at it, and seeing the slight jump from the pain of him moving it, Nathan said “This is worse than I thought. It’ll have to be reset and stitched, and than a splint applied. I think it’d be better to do this in my clinic.”
She looked at Chris and Vin first, then at Nathan and shook her head. “Nope, fix it here or I’ll do it myself. I’m not goin’ back down those stairs at the moment.”
“It’ll hurt since I don’t have anything here to give you for the pain.”
“Pain I can take as long as y’all keep me from movin’.”
Chris smiled and said “Already figured it out.” He sat down on the one chair in the room and pulled her onto his lap, holding her good arm within his arms, while looking at Vin and saying “Vin, hold her legs so she won’t kick any of us.”
Vin nodded and got down in front of her keeping a tight grip on her ankles.
Nathan gently took the right arm and started to rest the broken bones. Chris looked at Brandi and said “Remove the claws from my leg Dee.”
Looking down at her good hand she realized what she was starting to do and forced herself to change the claws that were growing back into her own nails. Looking back at Chris, she shrugged slightly and said “Sorry, I’ll try to control it.”
He nodded as he felt the marks just made healing under her hand.
Nathan continued to reset the bones as Brandi fought to control herself from changing. At one point she felt an extra squeeze on her ankle and looked at Vin. He didn’t say a thing, but she could see he was wondering if she was alright. Though tears were rolling down her face, she gave a slight imperceptible nod. Knowing he wouldn’t get any more than that, he returned the nod.
Chris noted the unspoken exchange and got hit with another feeling he thought long buried. He found he was jealous, of both of them. Jealousy of Vin because it looked as if Vin had a past with this woman in his arms and jealousy of Brandi because of the easy way she and Vin communicated without saying anything, the way he had since that first meeting with Vin.
Nathan got the arm reset than asked “Do you have a needle and thread ma’am? I didn’t know I’d need some.”
“Please call me either Nic or Brandi, though Chris is probably right, Nic would be safer. And, yes, over in that bag,” she replied pointing across the room with the hand Chris let go for the moment.
Going over, Nathan found what he needed immediately. Seeing the needle was already threaded, he went to work stitching the arm. Once he was finished, he looked at the other two and said “I’m done, you can let go now. Ma’am, sorry, Nic, I’ll need you to come by the clinic to get a splint. You’ll be able to find me, most likely, in the saloon when you’re done cleaning up. And before you start to call me anything else, it’s Nathan.”
“Alright, thanks Nathan. I’ll make sure to find you for a splint for it. And, if someone doesn’t stop me again, I may join y’all for a drink, to help the pain.”
“We’d be happy to have one with ya, and if you play cards, Ezra is always trying to start a game.”
“Hmm, now that could be fun.” She looked at Chris and Vin and said “Straight or read?”
Both men started laughing and answered in unison “Both.”
Nathan shook his head, not having any idea what they were talking about. Since he was finished up, he asked “You need me for anything else Chris?”
Still slightly laughing, Chris answered “No, thanks Nathan, appreciate it. And if you wanna leave Vin, you can. Thanks for getting the shirts and appreciate the help.”
With a smile, Vin answered “Always a pleasure to help a beautiful lady, and you too Cowboy. Let me know if you need anymore help, I’ll just be downstairs, along with the rest of the boys, making sure the trouble is gone and then I’m sure we’ll meander back to the saloon.”
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” Chris replied while shaking his head and starting to laugh again.
With a smile, Vin tipped his hat and walked out the door with Nathan.
Realizing that he was still sitting and Brandi hadn’t moved, Chris said “You plannin on staying there?”
Turning so she was straddling him, she replied “Ya know Cowboy, I actually was. I was thinkin this was a pretty good seat.” She then did something she didn’t think she would ever do, she leaned forward and softly kissed him.
Both the way she was sitting and the kiss surprised him, but not for long. The moment he saw her walk into the saloon, he felt himself growing hard, then having her sitting with her back to him on his lap had increased the already rock hardness he felt. Her turning and then the kiss was his complete undoing. He brought her back forward and started ravaging her mouth with his own, while undoing the back of the dress she was wearing. She started in on his shirt, undoing the buttons and taking it off him, than lifted slightly to undo his pants as best she could. Taking her with him, he got up from the chair and gently set her on her feet. He helped the dress fall to the floor, leaving her in her stockings and garter belt. His hands traveled up her body, stopping and taking her breasts in both hands, enjoying the fact they completely filled his hands. As he caressed, her body involuntarily moved into his and her head went back in surrender. Since he couldn’t deny the way he reacted to her, he knew he had to fill himself with her. Picking her up and being careful of the unsplinted arm, he carried her to the bed and set her down. Before joining her, he removed his boots, pants and underwear. When he did join her, he gave her a kiss on the lips, before starting an exploration of her body with his lips and hands. His first stop was at her breasts. He took one in hand and one in mouth, giving both an equal amount of pleasure. After a time, he switched sides, making sure both got the same treatment. As he started moving down he noted the butterfly birthmark under her right breast. Finding it intriguing, he gave it a gentle kiss before continuing down. He found himself stopping at her belly button, finding something else intriguing and nothing he had seen before. He looked up at her with a questioning look and only received a shake of her head with a look that said ‘I’m not ready to explain’. Giving a slight nod of understanding, he gave the ring that lay there a gentle kiss, then continued his way down. Since he had reached her garter belt, he unhooked the stockings, and started to remove the garter belt, finding on his way down a tattoo on her right inside hip bone area. Figuring he would receive the same look, he gently kissed it before removing the garter belt completely. He figured he would leave the stockings on as long as possible, since he liked the looks of just them on her. He moved back up her legs only as far as where he wanted to bury himself in her. Starting with kisses to her inner thighs, he found he scorpion birthmark hiding there. Finding this as intriguing as her higher birthmark, he kissed it as his thumb moved over her clit. He could feel the wet heat of her as he worried the nub his thumb was controlling, knowing that she started feeling the wet heat at the same time he felt himself enlarging. Taking a finger from his other hand, he entered her core, slowly working it in and out of her. He added a second finger while having his mouth and tongue take over where his thumb was. The moment his tongue touched her clit, she bucked, her body reaching for more. She was already riding his fingers slowly, but now she had increased to a faster pace on his fingers and against his tongue. He brought his fingers out, hearing a whimper from her, and moved them to toward her clit. When he moved his fingers under where his tongue was, he got a small taste of her and found he wanted more. He moved his tongue to her core and took up where his fingers left off. He would hear quiet moans and gasps from her as he continued the onslaught. When he found he couldn’t wait anymore, he moved back over her, so their bodies were even, leaning down to kiss her. When she didn’t feel him enter her, she lifted slightly to wrap her legs around his waist and took him in. They didn’t move for a minute or two, letting their bodies get use to this new sensation. When they started moving, they started slow, taking their time. But that didn’t last long, soon they were moving like the devil himself was after them, taking as much as they could from the other. His mouth never left hers and he swallowed her cries of pleasure while feeling her tighten around him. When he found he couldn’t hold it any longer, he exploded into her, feeling her climax completely with him. He laid to her left side and held her for a bit. She turned to look at him after a few minutes and said with mischief “I suppose I should take a bath to look normal again. Join me?”
Grinning wickedly and having an equally wicked look in his eyes, he said “Lady, I was just thinkin the same thing. Don’t mind if I do.” He disengaged himself from her, got up and moved to the bath, getting in.
Once he was settled, she got up and moved to the tub, noticing through the water that he was hard again. Raising an eyebrow, she smiled innocently, then climbed in the tub in front of him with her back to him. She could feel the sharp intake of breath when he was sheathed by something he wasn’t expecting. She could also feel a slight increase in him. She leaned back against him and as they started to move his hands moved around the front of her and his fingers took her core. She rode him this way until she felt him start to come, then she turned herself around and putting her weight on her knees, filled her core with him. She rode him, leaning into the arm that now supported her back, as a hand claimed a breast. They moved faster to the explosion they both now knew would come. She sagged against him after that release to rest a minute, when she felt a washcloth moving up and down her back, then down her left arm. She raised slightly to look at him receiving a smile. Seeing the question in her eyes, he said “Lean back get your hair wet. I’ll wash your front, then your hair for you.” She liked the sound of that so she did as he asked, leaning back so she was flat against the water with only her hair going under. He gently washed the front of her, including what he could reach of her legs before he leaned over her and started washing her hair to remove the dye.
As they finished enjoying each other and began the actual bath, another stranger walked into the saloon. Vin was the first to see him and gave a slight wave to join them. Coming to the table Vin was at, the stranger shook Vin’s hand and said “Vin, it’s good to see you.”
Giving an easy smile, Vin returned “Good to see you Adam. What brings this far down?”
Seeing movement from the corner of his eye, Adam looked to it and said “Hey Buck, you here too? Man, the only one missin’ is Chris.”
Buck gave a low laugh and said “he ain’t exactly missin’. He’s here in town, just a mite busy at the moment. So what does bring you down here?”
Wondering what was going on, he wasn’t going to read either of his friends minds, he said “Taking the long way to Colorado Springs, looking for someone that left town in a hurry.” He noticed the look that passed between buck and Vin, so he asked “What’s going on? What are you trying to hide from me?”
From behind him, Adam heard “That’s a good question, big brother. I’ve been trying to figure out what these men are hiding since I got here. I couldn’t help overhearing, did you lose something, or perhaps, someone.”
Buck was unprepared for the look that crossed Adam’s face when the stranger looking fro Brandi asked that. Turning slowly in his seat, Adam replied, “Jeff, why am I not surprised you’re involved in this disappearance. Oh and since you seem to forget it so easily, you were disowned by the family, including mom and dad, so please do not refer to me that way again.”
Not sure what was going on, Buck suddenly said “Hey Adam, you remember Nic? Well, he’s here. In fact that’s where Chris is, helping Nic get cleaned up since Nic broke an arm after taking a spill off his horse on his way into town.”
Adam suddenly turned back to Buck and schooling his features, he asked “Nic’s here? Damn, I haven’t seen him in a while. Where’s he staying?”
“The hotel,” Buck answered and looking at Vin, asked “What room?”
“Thirteen,” Vin answered.
“Wait a minute,” Jeff said. “There’s a Nic Richards registered to that room. You know that person?”
“Ya, I do. Surprising isn’t it. I have friends you don’t know about. And by the way, you had better hope like hell and thank the gods that I find Brandi before you do. Otherwise, I will find a way to end your sorry life. Now get the hell out of my way.” Turning back to Vin and Buck, Adam said “I’ll be back. I’m going to head over to hopefully see Nic.”
“We’ll be here,” was all Adam heard as he strode out the swinging doors.
Getting to the hotel and up the stairs, Adam walked to room thirteen, thinking to himself ‘Figures you little witch. You probably asked for the room on purpose.’
Brandi’s hair and body, including her right arm, had been washed when they both felt him grow hard inside of her again. Since her legs where already wrapped around him, she had switched her legs while they were washing up, he sat back so she was facing him on his lap. They were just building up a rhythm when an insistent pounding was heard and she felt someone knocking at the block she had in her mind. Taking a quick peek without bringing the block down she looked to see who it was. With a sigh, she quietly said “It’s Adam. He won’t go away unless I talk to him, one way or the other. It won’t take me long so don’t forget where we are.”
Smiling, Chris replied “Won’t be a problem.”
With a smile, she let part of the block down. While still looking at Chris, she said in her mind ‘Adam, what are you doing here?’
Stopping the knocking, he replied in kind ‘Looking for you, brat. I know what’s going on in there so you can drop the wall completely.’
‘No I can’t. This is enough of a drop. Why are you looking for me?’
‘You left town without word, and then Jeff was suddenly gone. No one was sure what happened. Why did you come here, why not just come to one of us?’
‘You know why I couldn’t go to one of you, Adam. I just got on Thunder, after changing clothes at the house and grabbing some things, and rode. I just ended up here. I really had not specific destination in mind.’
‘Do you actually have a broken arm?’
‘Yeah, and sorry I didn’t have you do it. It’s been fixed now; just have to have a splint put on.’
‘Damn it Bree, I wish you’d have said something to one of us. We had no idea he arrested you again. We’ve all been worried.’
‘I’m sorry. But, now you know I’m fine, so you can leave.’ She suddenly felt some nimble fingers reminding her where they were at. As her body started to react, she barely heard Adam say ‘Not a chance’ before he was completely shut out again.
Chris saw when what he was doing registered. Her eyes opened wider, and then went out of focus. As they started moving, she ran her left hand up and down his chest, while biting her bottom lip to keep from crying out. He moved his legs and raised her higher to take a breast in his mouth while they moved together. She started moving faster, wanting more, taking more. Her head fell back as they moved closer to release, their bodies moving faster. She joined him as he spilled into her one final time, only this time she had a vision of them together sometime in the future, living together, loving together and having children. She knew she couldn’t tell him of this vision since it could change those future events, but he saw something different in her eyes, for a split second, so he asked “What’s wrong? What did you see?”
Leaning down to kiss him, she replied “Nothing is wrong. It was a good vision, but I can’t say what it was since I don’t know when in the future it will take place. Actually, what I can say is that we will be together.”
“That’s something at least,” he told her as he helped her to stand in the tub. He stepped out and grabbing a towel, helped her step out, wrapping the towel around her. He helped her dry off before he worried about himself.
Once they were both dry, and he was half dressed, he helped her get the extra water out of her hair, then she talked him through braiding it. After her hair was out of the way, he helped her put the binding across her breasts, pulling it tight enough to flatten her out but where she could still breathe. She pulled on the one pair of pants she brought with her and pulled on one of Chris’ shirts that Vin brought over, having Chris help her with buttoning up and tucking in the shirt to the pants. After helping her with fastening her pants, Chris finished getting dressed. She pulled out a pair of socks and attempted to put them on one handed while Chris finished his own dressing. Not having any luck, she waited til he was done so he could help her. Once he was dressed and her socks were on, she was able to pull her boots on without a problem.
Finally dressed and ready to head to the saloon, they opened the door to find Adam still out there. Amazed that Adam had waited, Chris said “Adam, good to see you. What brought you down?”
Looking pointedly at Brandi, Adam said “Came looking for someone who wandered off without saying anything.”
“I’m sorry Adam. I didn’t mean to make y’all worry. Ya know I can’t promise it won’t happen again, but I’ll try to let someone know if I leave.”
Knowing that was all he would get out of her, he conceded with “I guess that’ll do. It isn’t that safe for you to be riding alone like that, even as Nic. Especially with a broken arm and you not like having to make a choice on having to shoot or throw your knife. Having only one good arm to defend yourself with makes it rough.”
Knowing Adam was right, she nodded her consent as they headed downstairs and out the main doors toward the saloon.
As they walked into the saloon Buck got up from his table and walked over, saying “Nic, it good to see you. It’s been a while.”
“Hey Buck,” she replied, “It has been a few years. It’s good to see you too.”
She sat down at a table with Adam, keeping an eye on everything going on around her, while Chris went to the bar. Nathan walked up and said “I went ahead and got the splint for that arm.” Putting it on her arm he continued “Leave this on for the next couple of weeks or so and try to use that arm as little as possible.”
‘Thanks Nathan, I will. And if I forget, I have a nag nearby,” she replied with a smile and a slight inclination of her head toward Adam.
Adam, having already looked at Brandi’s arm, asked “Are you a doctor?”
Nathan shook his head saying “No sir, just a healer, but wanted to become a doctor. Why, are you?”
“Yeah, up in Rock Creek. You did good work on that arm and lived through it. That says a lot.”
“Thanks. Chris and Vin helped keep ‘im from moving. I just set it and stitched it up.”
“Well, they may have, but they both also know the way he can get when dealing with something not liked. Also, unfortunately, with this one, you have to have two full bottles of whiskey, one for any wound and one for him to drink to kill the pain.” Adam’s chair suddenly moved and when he turned to Brandi, he saw the warning sparks in her eyes. He ignored the sparks, smiled, and said “Sorry, don’t know why I did that.” Adam looked up to see Chris hiding a smile, but he heard a laugh covered by a cough from Vin. Nathan, Buck and Josiah had seen the sparks but decided not to ask on it right then.
Getting himself back under control, Chris turned to the table behind him and said “Why don’t you bring that deck over here Ezra and the four of us will play a few hands.”
Getting up with his cards, Ezra said “Should that, child, play Mr. Larabee? He looks younger than Mr. Dunne.”
“Plenty old enough Ezra, and when has that stopped you?” Chris said, than continued quietly so only the table would here “Besides, you know as well as anyone that looks can be deceiving.” Brandi looked up at Ezra right then and Ezra realized who she was.
Smiling at him, she said “Hi, I’m Nic. You are?”
Keeping his features schooled, Ezra replied “Ezra Standish. A pleasure. So what are we playing?”
“Your call,” said Chris.
Ezra smiled and named the game. Vin had moved to stand behind Brandi to help her hold the cards. Buck, JD and Josiah joined the rest, standing behind those seated to watch the game. She played straight, watching this gambler to see how he played and if he cheated, and lost the first few hands on purpose. Once she figured him out, she started playing both straight and checking the next cards and started winning. Ezra looked flabbergasted that she kept beating him and the Vin, Chris, and Adam started laughing. Looking at the three men, Ezra asked “Do you gentlemen find something funny in this?”
“Since they can’t quit laughing,” she said looking at the three, “I’ll try to explain. You’re good Ezra; I can call you Ezra can’t I.” At his nod, she continued, “And anyone that isn’t looking for it, wouldn’t have noticed when you cheated. And it’s not worth trying to deny it. You can’t cheat a cheat. Did I cheat? Maybe. Did you see me cheat? Probably not. If and when I cheat at cards, I do it without notice. Where I can prove you cheated, you can’t prove I did and never will be able too. Maybe one of these days you and I can have a game played straight, and we can see who plays better.” Downing the glass sitting in front of her, and not realizing she had already went through a few, she said “Thanks for the game. I’ll see y’all later; I’m finding I can’t keep my eyes open so I’m getting some sleep.”
As she started to stand, she heard “No,” from Adam. Noticing the questioning her eyes, he said “You are not going back to your room by yourself. I’m assuming you didn’t bring the wolves either, since I haven’t seen them. While Jeff is here snooping around, I don’t want you without some protection. Though I haven’t seen anyone quicker, I only know of three, maybe four, that are as quick as you are with a gun, and I have only seen one person as quick as you with a knife, and that person taught you. As I already said, you ONLY have one good arm for the moment, and since you would rather use both your gun and knife, given the choice, I’m taking the choice out. You know I can have Gray and both your wolves here quickly, if necessary. Don’t argue this one with me, because you know you’ll lose. Deal with it or go home now. That’s your choice.” He watched as her eyes became black with flames, proving he had pissed her off. He didn’t care, he was use to the backlash of her anger and he wasn’t giving in.
Trying to at least calm her voice, Brandi replied “Fine. Do whatever the hell you want to do, but I’m getting some sleep. So, whatever you decide, I’ll be in my room.” She turned and left the saloon, surprising five of the eight men around the table by not looking at all like she had just put away six or seven glasses of whiskey. She needed to release some of the anger Adam had just caused. She wanted to blow something up, but since this wasn’t her town, she had to be careful, though she had to be careful in Rock Creek, she could at least go to her own home there (away from prying eyes) and conflict her damage. She was aware of having company and she knew who it was. Sensing hands come to her shoulders she said “Don’t. Just don’t.”
He walked around her and looking down at her face, Adam said “I’m sorry Bree. But, damn, I don’t want him to hurt you again. I know you feel like you will now have a babysitter, but you won’t. Gray is actually already here in town, and I’m getting a room next door to yours for us. I just want you safe.”
“That’s fine, but please don’t start hovering over me or anything. Jeff thinks I’m Nic, and don’t want him to think anything different.”
“I know. Now head on up if you want, and get some sleep. I’m not surprised you’re tired. I’m going to find Gray, get our room, and then hang around the hotel for a bit. If it isn’t Gray or I, then Chris, Vin, or one of those other seven will be.”
While Brandi and Adam were talking near the hotel, Gray walked into the saloon. Jeff looked up and not realizing who it was, walked over and said “Adam, I thought you just left, running after that boy that was with you.”
“By the Gods, Jeff, haven’t you EVER figured out who Adam and I were? Besides that, what the FUCK are you doing here and what the HELL do you want?” Gray asked angrily.
“Sorry Grayson didn’t realize you were here also, and nope I haven’t ever figured out who was who. Couldn’t be bothered.” Jeff said, trying to be funny.
No one expected Gray’s next move, especially Jeff. With one punch, Gray had Jeff on the floor before anyone could blink. Turning around, Gray smiled at who he saw. “Well I’ll be damned. Chris, Vin, how the hell are you both?” he asked.
Vin answered first with “Can’t complain,” and a shrug.
Chris shook his head and said “Depends on the day. Not bad today. What brings you here?”
“Here with Adam. Didn’t know that garbage was here, though. At least I know why a certain bird flew so fast. Can’t blame her any.” Gray took something out of his pocket and handed it to Chris. “Someone is gonna want to lock him up, but put that on him first. It will keep him there til Adam and I leave with him.”
Nodding, Chris turned to JD and, throwing what Gray gave him to the youngest member, said “JD, why don’t you out that on the idiot on the floor and take him on over to the jail. No one will keep you from doing either of those.”
“Sure thing, Mr. Larabee,” JD replied walking to the man on the floor. After putting what was essentially a lock on Jeff, JD looked for help moving the man. Josiah walked to JD and without difficulty, lifted the man of the floor and carried him to a jail cell for JD.
“So,” asked Gray, “you seen my brother, or any one else?”
“Yeah, Adam was just here, followed Nic out,” Chris said with an inclination of his head toward the group that were with Jeff.
Understanding without looking, Gray replied “You know where they went?”
“Nic was heading back to his room to get some sleep. Don’t know if Adam caught up to him first or not. May check over there. In fact, I’ll go with you.”
Gray knew what had been going on in Brandi’s room as well as Adam had, so he understood Chris wanting to check on her. Keeping a neutral face, Gray replied “Works for me. Besides Nic might need saving from Adam. Oh wait, actually it’s probably the other way around,” Gray finished on a laugh.
They walked out of the saloon together, both tall (though one had 5inches on the other), and blond (the taller of the two had hair to his shoulders), but one had blue eyes and the other hazel. Both also happened to be dressed in black, though the taller of the two varied his colors more so than the other. Neither was surprised to see Adam coming out of the hotel.
“Good, there you are,” Adam told his twin. “I got a room for us next to the brat. Room twelve, she’s in thirteen.” Adam watched as Gray smiled at that, so he continued “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, she did it on purpose. Anyway, I was just going to make sure that little piss ant wasn’t making trouble, and to go find you to let you now she’s safe, but bruised and a broken arm, and probably already asleep.”
“Twelve works for me, glad you did that. As for the piss ant, he’s in jail after I punched him. He won’t leave, I watched while the kid,” gray looked at Chris for a moment and then said “JD, that’s his name, put the lock on Jeff so he can’t leave til you or I remove it. I’m glad she’s safe and I feel even better about hitting him now, and sleep is good. She seems to have had a busy day already.”
Exchanging a glance with his brother, Adam said “Chris, why don’t you go and check on her. Even though Jeff is in jail, I don’t trust those idiots he uses as deputies. You may as well take first shift at staying with her. If you want relief, just let either of us know. Oh, we’ll pass on you’re going to take first watch of her and see if any of the others, besides Vin, want to help.”
Chris knew what they were referring to, but made no comment. Nodding his head in agreement for checking with the rest, he headed to the hotel. Going into the hotel, he went straight to Brandi’s room. Finding the door unlocked, he walked in to see that she was sleeping. Kicking off his boots and removing his hat, he sat down next to her on the bed, only to be surprised that she instinctively curled into his side.
When Chris sat on the bed, somewhere in her dream, she felt the extra weight. Though she was not, by any means, use to sleeping with anyone but her two wolves, Herc and Ares, she knew who it was and moved to him, making her dreams that much better.
