S2's Final Four
Jun. 19th, 2007 09:42 amYeah... I'm a happy gal... My S2 DVDs arrived yesterday and I've FINALLY seen the last four episodes. Wow... they would have to be some of the best episodes of the entire show. *does a Josiah sigh*
Penance... Lots of Josiah angst here plus some much needed backstory and Vin... good and loyal Vin... I swear that man will go to the ends of the earth for his friends... What loyalty, nobility but he still needs a haircut. A blast from the past for Nathan... I suppose it was his turn to get some. And Chris... dispensing wisdom with that terrifying smile of his. That man gives me the heebie jeebies with that deliciously creepy smile he flashes at opportune moments.
Interesting reference to the PInkerton Agency and a serial killer to boot. And here comes the shocker... Ezra... actually cut up (no pun intended) over Miss Irene's death... The man seemed genuinely upset over it or was he really upset that there's no one to mend the rips and tears in his jackets? Betting on Buck's misfortunes... honestly... will that man never learn?!

Ladykillers... This was a gem... dark and funny. I thought the female bounty hunters looked a little bland (seemed to belong to school of one expression) but I take their point that bounty hunting was much safer than matrimony or motherhood. Well, Buck... such a sucker for a pretty face but I loved his anguish when he thought JD was at death's door.
Ezra P. Standish... even if you are the object of much humour, you do it with such panache... "the brotherhood of man" indeed. LOL And if he ever gave up gambling, I can definitely envisage a career in law for him. Doesn't look too much like a leap from grifting. ;)

Serpents... Amazing episode all the more so because it's full of Ezra goodness (or is it badness). "Now is the winter of our discontent". Against the backdrop of frontier political machinations, Ezra, bedraggled, drawn and dissatisfied with his lot, is faced with the greatest challenge of his life... To take or not to take... Feeling unsupported by his colleagues and brothers-in-arms, he wrestles with his inner demons alone. Initially I wasn't sure about Antony Starke's take on this struggle... but as I have given it more thought, I see his portrayal of Ezra as a man addicted to wealth. It reminded me of Charlie' struggle with drugs in Lost. That same desperation and urgency registered on Ezra's face as he dipped his hands into the till. Like a man looking for the next fix. Fascinating performance.
I really liked Mary in this... she was confident, witty and sassy. I think Laurie Holden really came into her own in S2... she seemed much more relaxed and more comfortable in the role.
And Chris at the end... what a smile... And yeah...whatever did you do with that money?

Obsession... Oh my... Chris in a tux... Yowsers. Photographed for all posterity too. As a matter of fact, we see a lot of Chris in this. If the show had continued, I wonder where they would've gone with this whole fatal attraction arc. I certainly didn't feel from watching Nemesis that his family was the primary target. Still, we got to see our boys in action... lots of preening and posturing from our gunslingers.
Poor Hilda... I'm glad Buck finally saw her true worth and gave her a nice send-off.
As for the end, I'm still trying to work out what exactly it was Chris was trying to say to Mary and what she was trying to say to him. Some kind of half-hearted apology perhaps?
