Wilmington Halloween
by Ami-chan
Chris’s family didn’t celebrate Halloween, not really. They passed out candy for the kids and sometimes they carved a pumpkin, but they never put out fake rats or fake tombstones or hung cobwebs or dressed in costumes. Chris was dragged to a “fall festival” at their church and forced to not trample little children underfoot. However, his parents were letting him stay the night at Buck’s house and it was trick-or-treat night.
Buck and his mom did Halloween right. They had a fake zombie-creature in the yard that alarmed anyone that passed. There were ghosts hanging from their porch that needed painted and so looked older and worn and kind of creepy anyway. There were large fake rats placed around and lots of fake cobwebs with fake plastic spiders in them. They also had costumes.
“We’re going to make the little kids pee their pants.” It almost seemed cruel and yet Chris was delighted by the thought. They had black long-sleeved shirts, black pants, black boots, and black gloves to go with the cowls with the black mesh that would hide their faces completely.
“That’s part of the fun, though.” Buck was grinning like crazy. They were also waiting for Buck’s mom to go to work – she was an exotic dancer, but Chris had never told his parents that part – so when she was gone and they’d passed out all of the Halloween candy for the kids, they had some other stops to make.
Buck’s mom came through the living room, wearing a perfectly normal outfit and a long coat. She would change once she got to the nightclub, but she didn’t dress like that around the house or even when she went out. “You boys be good. Once you finish scaring the children and giving them their candy you remember to lock up, all right? No leaving the house, you got it?”
“Yeah, mom.”
“Yes Mrs. Wilmington.”
She flashed Chris a smile and shook her head. “My name’s Millie, Christopher. Have a good night then, boys, I’ll be back before morning.”
Buck watched Chris watching his mom leave. She was the kind of mom that other kids had fantasies about because she was so beautiful. It sometimes made Buck uncomfortable that people thought that about her like that because she was his mom, but there was only affection on Chris’s face. That was something Buck liked, that Chris liked him and not his mom.
“Come on, it’s about time.” They had two huge bowls of candies waiting by the door, big tacky green bowls, but they worked. After pulling on their cowls they went outside, Chris standing off to the side of the porch and standing frozen like a statue while Buck waited at the door with the candy. “Oh, wait!” Buck grabbed a huge fake axe and tossed it to Chris.
“Perfect!”
The first kids crept onto the porch, having already been startled by the zombie-creature in the yard. Their parents were waiting at the end of the long porch telling the kids that it was okay, that there was nothing to be scared of. Chris twitched the axe slightly, making one of the little girls scream. Behind their masks Chris and Buck were smiling as the children grabbed their candy and ran back to their parents.
Then they traded places, Buck standing still like a fake statue and scaring the little kids while Chris passed out candy. Each time there was a lull in children getting candy they exchanged posts and laughed to each other about startling the kids. This was the kind of fun that Chris could never have at his house. They didn’t get a lot of children for trick-or-treat anyway since they lived in an out of the way place, something of an exclusive neighborhood where mostly rich older people lived. Buck lived right in the middle of town and there were plenty of people and children around to make it interesting.
Once trick-or-treat was over Buck grabbed his keys to the house and they locked up after grabbing their shaving cream and toilet paper – extremely necessary tools for some more Halloween trickery. “Sure you’re up to this?” Buck glanced over at Chris; they had taken off their capes but they were still wearing their cowls so he still couldn’t see his face. Chris was pretty straight-laced. He ran track and played tennis. He was dragged to country clubs and went golfing with his dad.
“Of course!” Chris was excited and ready to get out.
It still surprised him that Chris was his friend or that they became friends in the first place. Buck didn’t play sports. He played the trumpet in band and had spent a few years in drama club doing plays. When he thought about it there was really nothing that connected them except the fact that they’d met officially in the sixth grade. Before that they’d been in different classes but they all had the same recess so they’d ended up playing together without knowing each other’s names. Having similar schedules in the sixth grade had made them instant friends and Chris had even taken to helping out with the drama club – though only as far as the sets and behind the scenes things went. Chris started to sweat when he had to talk in front of his class, let alone in front of a whole audience.
After several hours spent in toilet papering and putting shaving cream on people’s cars and windows in an area three blocks from Buck’s house at several particular enemies’ homes they made their way back to Buck’s. They were tired and happy, their hearts racing as they slipped back into the house and collapsed on the worn but comfortable couch. “That was great! What do you want to do now?”
Maybe it was the excitement of the evening or maybe it was Chris’s excitement, his face glowing, and his eyes shining that made Buck grab him by the arm and kiss him. When he pulled back Buck was almost sure Chris was going to deck him, but it never came. Chris was staring at him with wide eyes, his lips parted in frozen shock. Then Chris moved, almost nervously, and a steady red color began creeping up his neck, staining his ears and cheeks with cheery warmth.
“You okay?”
Chris glared at him coldly. “Shut up. You just surprised me.”
Since he hadn’t been hit Buck took that as a good sign and he leaned in close to Chris and watched in amusement as his friend sank back into the couch. “That mean I can kiss you again?”
“I don’t know!”
Buck did know so he kissed Chris again and again until Chris finally pushed him away. Okay, so Chris didn’t like his tongue sliding into his mouth. That was something they could work on. As popular as Chris was it was kind of surprising that he was not more experienced with kissing. On the other hand Buck couldn’t think of anyone that Chris had ever dated before, seriously dated and not just met at some dance or whom he claimed was his “girlfriend” even if they barely spoke.
“This okay with you?”
Chris was scowling and glaring at everything but Buck. “Stop asking me that.”
“I will when you answer me.” Buck spoke in Chris’s ear and watched him twist as his breath tickled him.
“It’s okay.”
“You ain’t gonna hit me or anything are you?”
Chris shook his head no. He glanced sideways at Buck as a thought slipped through him that he desperately wanted an answer to. “Do you – I mean, do you like boys? Or do you…”
“I like boys and I like you.” Buck grinned as Chris ducked his head again. For someone with such a badass reputation Chris was a big softie and as shy as anyone could ever be when he wasn’t in a big group of people. “Did you have fun today?”
Chris blushed several shades darker but was able to meet Buck’s eyes as he replied, “It was the best Halloween ever.”
“I’m sure we’ll have better ones in the future, huh?” When Buck leaned in to kiss him again, Chris laughed and held him off.
“I hope so.”

This one was fun and a lot lighter than the rest of this universe. Makes me want to write fluffyness.

Date: 2007-10-30 02:01 am (UTC)I love the idea of Chris and snare/drum-line. So true.
(I was a woodwind - we share well. Bet Vin was too, Mr. Harmonica. . . . )

Date: 2007-10-30 02:15 am (UTC)Yes, if only Chris would embrace his band geekiness.
I play flute and harp, but for band I was a pit player (my fondness has always been for the vibraphone and the chimes).
Vin is so a clarinet. I'd go as far as to say bass clarinet. buzz buzz buzz

Date: 2007-10-30 02:39 am (UTC)Of course, there is no way I could disagree with you about Vin! Even though I can see him with a bassoon as well . . . gotta love a man who can blow a double reed.
