Timeline

Has anyone ever attempted to make a timeline of the show?

I mean, over what period of time do all the episodes take place?

I went through and did a rough outline just by looking at screencaps from blackraptor and counting up the days over which each episode took place. Then I arbitrarily picked out how many days there were between each episode (except for 'Sins of the Past' and 'Love & Honor' where Ezra specifically says it has been "two weeks" since Inez came to town). I went in order of how the episodes aired.

Anyway, it was just a rough, silly thing, but I came up with approximately 8 - 9 months between 'GotC' and 'Obsession', and this was with a very scrunched timeline. Stretched out, it could easily be a year or more.

I was just wondering if anyone else had done something similar or with a bit more care?

The number of days over which the course of the episode took place is in () and may not be accurate, and the randomly assigned days between is underneath:

*GotC (6 - 12 days)
-1 day
*ODOW (2 days)
-7 days [I gave this one awhile because Ezra's sideburns are different - thank goodness]
*Working Girls (4-5 days)
-2 days
*Safecracker (3 days)
-10 days [JD was stabbed in this one and by Witness, he's fine]
-According to this little timeline, Ezra's 30 days are up somewhere in here
*Witness (4 days)
-2 days [JD is clean-shaven at the end of 'Witness' and is stubbly by 'Nemesis'
*Nemesis (4 days)
-2 days
*The Collector (6? days) [that seems like a lot]
-4 days [JD's beard is lighter in Manhunt than in Collector, as though he shaved and it grew back some]
*Manhunt (3-4 days)
-2 days [before Chris disappears]
*Inmate 78 (14-18 days)
-14 days [Chris needs some recovery time]

*The New Law (5-6 days)
-3 days
*Sins of the Past (3-4 days)
-10 days [in L&H, Ezra will mention that Inez has been in town "a mere two weeks"]
*Love & Honor (5 days?)
-10 days [Buck must have time to recover]
*Vendetta (3 days)
-7 days
*Wagon Train I & II (10-12 days)
-7 days
*The Trial (4-5 days)
-3 days
*Chinatown (4-5 days)
-7 days
*Achilles (4 days)
-7 days
*Penance (4-5 days)
-7 days
*Lady Killers (4 days)
-14-21 days [JD's got to heal this time, and Vin too]
*Serpents (5 days)
-14 days [Ezra]
*Obsession (6-7 days?)

This timeline gives a minimum of 236 days and a max of 263, but that is just assuming one followed the other with only a few days downtime between eps.

I don't think I've seen anything like that, sound interesting! Are you going to post your results?

I think I did see one somewhere (it also added in the pre-series stuff and put Obsession before Serpents, which I do too so that didn't worry me :) but am always interested to see another...

This drives me nuts because apparently, the Old West did not celebrate holidays. See, just ONE reference to Christmas or New Year's or, heck, I dunno, even some cold weather would give everyone a much better idea of how time is progressing.

Anyway, "16) There is a 6-month gap between "Nemesis" and "The New Law," as evidenced by Chris Larabee's statement in "TNL," regarding when he killed the assassin, Cletus Fowler." from here (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~poindexterfamily/MagSevenTrivia.htm). There are some other timeline-ish things at this site, too, that might help.

Re: ordering, I think I read somewhere the original plan was Obsession before Serpents, but when CBS aired it, they did it with Serpents before Obsession. But I might be smoking crack too.

Also, it confuses me whenever you post somewhere with that icon because I think it's me! And then I'm all, wait a minute, I didn't post anything here!

Okay. Back to the shadows with me.

There were either origially made or originally aired (I can't recall which, I'll look it up) in that order, and the events (and probably fallout) makes more sense to me that way, so I stamp my virtual feet and insist. But only for me :)

Does anyone know what the production number means? Because on epguides.com, the production numbers are pretty jumbled. I would think it means that was when production began, but if that's the case, they're really out of order from when they aired.

About the order of episodes

Actually, Obsession and Serpents weren't aired by CBS. I am not positive about Penance and Ladykillers but I don't think I saw them till the series reaired on the TNN channel, but I don't think they aired on CBS either.

I go with the order on the DVD's, too.

Forgot to tell you, this is a good idea - trying to get some kind of timeline for the canon. I'm sure there are other clues in the episodes that might help. Guess we'll just have to watch all of them and make notes, and I'm happily going to make that sacrifice! ;)

This is a great idea and you've really got a very logical time line. There should be some time between adventures as they do need to heal up. JD's facial hair can help as well. As for the production numbers; they can really shoot out of order so that isn't always a help. I don't think they aired the last four episodes on CBS; they aired on TNN. Thanks for doing this.

Yes, it did seem to have more of a settled feel and more time elapsing. I guess they were settling in to the town.
